Adult cello classes starting in Term 1, 2026.

  • Weekly Cello Classes in Elsternwick

    Beginner Adult Cello Group Classes.

    No prior musical experience needed, just a cello to use!

    Monday: 5.30pm - 6.20pm (50 minute weekly class) OR

    Monday: 6.30pm - 7.20pm (50 minute weekly class)

    Location: St John’s Uniting Church. 567 Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick

    When a class reaches the maximum capacity of 6 students (minimum of 5 students), the class will commence.

    In order to maximise progress and learning, students should be prepared to commit to at least a year of group lessons, as per the structure of the program syllabus. Students will learn with the same group throughout the course of the year.

    Due to the nature of the course outline, once a group has commenced it is not possible for a new student to join the group.

    New students who miss out on a class placement may need to wait for the next available group class to commence. This may include being placed on a waiting list for a future class to start.

  • Weekly Cello Classes in North Melbourne

    Beginner Adult Cello Group Classes.

    No prior musical experience needed, just a cello to use!

    Wednesday: 5.30pm - 6.20pm (50 minute weekly class) OR

    Wednesday: 6.30pm - 7.20pm (50 minute weekly class)

    Location: North Melbourne Community Centre. 49-53 Buncle St, North Melbourne.

    When a class reaches the maximum capacity of 6 students (minimum of 5 students), the class will commence.

    In order to maximise progress and learning, students should be prepared to commit to at least a year of group lessons, as per the structure of the program syllabus. Students will learn with the same group throughout the course of the year.

Fees

Students will be invoiced at the start of every Semester and total fees will include two Semester payments for 12 months of group tuition.

Our beginner’s program is designed to be taught over a full year of learning.

Please consider this carefully before enrolling as students learn in the same group throughout the year.

Things to Know About Your Cello Group Classes

You will be learning in a small group of adult students with a maximum 6 students per class.

These classes are designed for absolute beginners to the cello! No prior musical experience is needed.

You will be taught in a small, supportive, fun and engaging group environment.

Upon registration you will be sent further details including the cello tutor book to purchase for your lessons.

Our small classes will be taught by Sharon; a highly skilled and professional Melbourne cellist and cello teacher with over 35 years playing and teaching experience.

At the end of the first year of your learning you will be able to play simple pieces, read music and perform in your very first class concert!

Over the course of the year you will:

  • Learn the correct posture and essential playing skills including arco and pizzicato

  • Learn to read music and rhythm notation

  • Develop basic left-hand technique, playing across all 4 strings of the cello

  • Develop your sense of intonation and learn to adjust the notes as you play

  • Learn essential cello techniques in every lesson

  • Understand how to produce a clear and resonant tone, exploring dynamics and articulation in your playing

  • Learn basic scales, exercises and beginner pieces

  • Gain confidence playing solo and in a group setting

  • Have fun learning together in our small and engaging groups

After a year of learning, and while continuing on with your second year of weekly group cello lessons you may be ready to join the Melbourne Community Cellists adults beginner ensemble, the ‘Prelude’ Cello Ensemble. This cello ensemble meets weekly on Saturdays and is a wonderful way to make music with others and become a part of our wider cello community.
