Adult Cello Group Lessons

Join a supportive and exciting musical journey in small group classes with a maximum of 5 students per class. These classes are designed especially for adult learners with no prior musical experience.

We will be offering 8 weekly classes per term in two different Melbourne locations:

Carnegie and North Melbourne

Our weekly group classes will teach you a strong foundation on the cello and an introduction to important technique and playing skills from scratch. You will build significant confidence, knowledge and results over a carefully guided year-long curriculum.

Be prepared for engaging discussion, fun and laughter along the way!

Sharon Leibowitz is a professional Melbourne based cellist and teacher with over three decades performing and teaching experience. She is a passionate and highly knowledgeable cellist and teacher who is committed to nurturing your talent, progress and love of music making.

The Melbourne Community Cellists will be offering Adult Cello Group Classes commencing in 2026.

Learn essential musical skills such as note reading, bow hold and left finger placement plus many new technical skills in every lesson. You will develop a sense of discipline and coordination, rhythm and intonation plus a love for your instrument through playing and learning collaboratively among others.

Most importantly you will make new cello friends from around Melbourne.

For maximum results our group lessons are designed as a year-long learning program, giving students the time and support they need to build solid skills and confidence to play. Upon joining students should be committed to learn over the course of the entire year if they are to learn all of the skills designed to be covered during the course of the program. Your commitment will also ensure that our groups remain consistent throughout the year. You will also need to to put aside some practice time every week at home so that you come prepared to the weekly lessons and the group can progress weekly. Practice strategies and achievable goals will be explained to you further in your first lessons as a group.

The program runs to an 8 week term over four terms with a structured curriculum. Classes run for 50 minutes each week. Payment is made in two term blocks at a time (i.e. two semesters of payment over the year). This will ensure consistency of the group program and commitment of each group member.

The curriculum gradually introduces essential technique and note reading, and students will be able to recognise notes across all four strings of the cello by the fourth term of learning. This long term approach will ensure a strong foundation of cello skills and provide a deep enjoyment of learning the cello. By the end of the year program, students will be able to play their first short pieces.

Important things to know before enrolling
